NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- U.S. pop star Madonna says she will donate to charity the $7.2 million she got from the sale of her 1921 Fernand Leger painting, "Three Women at the Red Table."

"Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!" Madonna wrote on her Facebook page.

The singer bought the painting at a Sotheby's auction for $3.4 million in 1990. Proceeds from Tuesday's sale will go to Madonna's Ray of Light Foundation, which supports girls' education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries, E! News said.
