Brian Eno produces 'healing' hospital music

LONDON, April 20 (UPI) -- Producer Brian Eno created an ambient music soundtrack described as a "healing environment" to be played in a British hospital, officials said.

Eno, 64, created two musical pieces that employ an electronic system that causes the music to change constantly and never repeat, The Independent reported Thursday.

The music, along with special light installations, is meant to invoke a serene atmosphere and be part of the new Montefiore Hospital's all-embracing means of treating patients, the newspaper said.

"Quiet Room for Montefiore" will be played in a space available in the hospital for patients, visitors and staff to relax, while the second installation, "77 Million Paintings for Montefiore," will play in the reception area.

"Creating a healing environment isn't only about correct surgical procedures and the right technology but also about making an atmosphere where the patients feel able to relax enough to clearly think through their options, and to properly take part in the healing process themselves," said IBI Nightingale, the architects of the Hove, east Sussex, hospital.

Eno was asked to create the project by a surgeon who said his wife found Eno's piece to calm airport nerves helpful, The Independent said.

"Since word about this broke in the architectural world there have been four different architects who work specifically in the design of hospitals who have expressed particular interest in Brian's installations. I believe they have already visited the Montefiore Hospital. Brian may well get involved with more hospitals," said Eno's spokesman, whose name was not reported.
