NEW YORK, March 21 (UPI) -- Artist-activist Yoko Ono has tweeted a photo of the glasses her husband, music icon John Lennon, was wearing when he was shot and killed in New York in 1980.

"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him," she wrote in a statement on Twitter Wednesday, what would have been the couple's 44th wedding anniversary.

"Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980," said a message on the photo.

The Hollywood Reporter said the image of the bloody glasses against a Manhattan skyline is from the cover of Ono's 1981 album, "Season of Glass," which was released less than six months after Lennon was killed by an obsessed fan who remains in prison.

Lennon was 40 when he died.
