NEW YORK, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Producer Cameron Mackintosh says the new 25th anniversary staging of the long-running hit musical, "Les Miserables," will open on Broadway in spring 2014.

Directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell, the production has toured the United Kingdom and is working its way through North America. It is to open at a Shubert theater to be announced soon, Playbill.com said Tuesday.

Written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, the show is based on Victor Hugo's 19th century novel of the same name.

The original musical ran on Broadway from 1987 to 2003. A revival was staged from 2006 to 2008.

Playbill.com said the latest imagining of the stage musical features fresh scenic and narrative elements, as well as new orchestrations.

A big-screen version of the musical received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, actor (Hugh Jackman), supporting actress (Anne Hathaway) and original song ("Suddenly").

"Les Mierables" won the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture/ musical or comedy, and Jackman and Hathaway won Golden Globes for their performances.
