RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 12 (UPI) -- The police chief of Richmond, Va., has resigned after the completion of Chris Brown's court-ordered community service in the city was doubted, officials said.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles last week accused Brown of submitting poorly documented and/or fraudulent paperwork saying he finished his 180 days of community service in his home state of Virginia.

The work was supposedly completed under the supervision of Richmond officers, who answered to Police Chief Bryan Norwood, but prosecutors said records show Brown traveling around the world on the dates documents said the artist was picking up trash in Virginia.

Brown agreed to the labor as part of his 2009 plea-bargain deal for assaulting his girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.

The New York Post reported Norwood quit his job after Brown's work requirements and their documentation were scrutinized.

"As of today, I've accepted the resignation of Bryan Norwood from his post as chief of police for the city of Richmond," the Post said Mayor Dwight Jones announced Tuesday.

"He has offered leadership that has brought us a little bit further in our endeavors to improve public safety. In many ways the Richmond Police Department and the city is better off because of his dedication. We've reached, however, a mutual agreement, at this time, that his time as Richmond police chief has come to an end. We certainly wish Chief Norwood much luck in his endeavors going forward."

Brown is due back in court in Los Angeles April 5 to answer the allegations about his community service requirements.

He and Rihanna recently announced they reconciled and they even sat together at Sunday's Grammy Awards ceremony.
