ENCINITAS, Calif., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A memorial has been held for Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar near his home in Encinitas, Calif.

Shankar died this month at the age of 92.

The BBC said singer Norah Jones and Olivia Harrison, widow of the late ex-Beatles musician George Harrison, were among the hundreds of mourners at the service for Shankar at the Self Realization Fellowship meditation center Dec. 20.

Tributes from sing Peter Gabriel and film director Martin Scorsese were read aloud during the memorial.

George Harrison once called Shankar -- who performed at New York's Woodstock music festival in 1969 and the 1967 Monterey Pop festival -- "the godfather of world music."
