LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Hollywood icon Charlie Chaplin's bowler hat and bamboo cane sold for $62,500 Sunday in an auction of silver screen and rock 'n' roll memorabilia in Los Angeles.

The hat and cane -- engraved with "CCLT 36" for Charlie Chaplin, "Little Tramp" and 1936, the year he retired the character -- had been expected to sell for $40,000 to $60,000, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The auction at Bonhams also featured work by Disney animator Thornton Hee, affectionately known as T. Hee and "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz, an "Annie Hall" script, Beatles bobblehead dolls, an alto sax once owned by Charlie Parker, turquoise jewelry owned by Jimi Hendrix, and Bing Crosby's straw hats and scuffed golf shoes.

More current movie memorabilia will also be on hand, including a battery-operated wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in two "Harry Potter" movies, and a foam-rubber alien from "The X-Files."

"To me, there are two big impulses for these kinds of collectors: One is, 'I want to know more about the person I admire.' The other is, 'I want to know more about the film that I admire, so I want to know more about the process,' " said auctioneer Catherine Williamson. "And if you look at all of this stuff, it falls in one or the other category."
