SACRAMENTO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A California student says if he had known his mashup of chart-topping hits by Carly Rae Jepson and Psy would go viral, he would have "done a better job."
Michael Simmons told the New York Daily News it took only a couple of hours to mix Psy's "Gangnam Style" together with Carly Rae's "Call Me Maybe" and create a new tune.
"Honestly it started off as a joke between my cousin and me," Simmons told the Daily News. "He was dancing 'Gangnam Style' to 'Call Me Maybe' and I decided to do a mashup.
"If I had known it was going to blow up, I would have done a better job," said Simmons, who has been doing amateur producing in his Sacramento-area home since he was in middle school.
It appeared Simmons did an adequate job with his computer -- the Daily News said the mashup, as of Friday, had been played 60,000 times on SoundCloud, racked up 49,000 Facebook "likes," and was being heavily tweeted.
Canada's Carly Rae Jepson has been taking the pop scene by storm this summer and South Korean rapper Psy has been on the MTV Video Awards and "Gangnam Style" has notched around 230 million YouTube views.
