LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Universal Pictures said Tuesday it is moving the North American release of its movie musical "Les Miserables" to Dec. 25, Christmas Day.

Director Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation of the classic stage show stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne. It was scheduled to hit theaters in the United States and Canada Dec. 14.

No reason was given for the change in date, but the decision came after Warner Bros. recently announced it had moved its new telling of "The Great Gatsby" from Dec. 25 to next summer.

Topics: Tom Hooper, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried
