Mariah Carey awarded BMI Icon

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A musical tribute paid homage to singer Mariah Carey as an "Icon" at the BMI Urban Music Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Carey joins the likes of The Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton as a BMI Icon in the R&B, rap, pop and hip-hop industries, BMI said in a written statement.

The awards ceremony, held Saturday at the Saban Theatre, named Drake and Lil Wayne co-Songwriters of the Year for each writing seven of the year's most performed songs. The award is Drake's second-consecutive in the category.

Nicki Minaj's song "Super Bass" earned Song of the Year and Pop Wansel won Producer of the year, BMI said.

EMI Music Publishing won the Publisher of the Year award for having 17 songs among the most performed of the year.

The first-ever BMI Social Star Award, presented by Spotify, went to Mac Miller.
