'Once' up for 11 Tony Awards

NEW YORK, May 1 (UPI) -- The Irish musical "Once" led the field with 11 nominations when Tony Award nods were announced Tuesday in New York.

"The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" followed close behind with 10 nominations apiece. "Peter and the Starcatcher" is up for nine awards, while "Follies" and "Newsies" each are in the running for eight, and "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman" and "One Man, Two Guvnors" are mentioned in seven categories.

Up for Best Play are "Clybourne Park," "Other Desert Cities," "Peter and the Starcatcher" and "Venus in Fur."

Shortlisted for Best Musical are "Leap of Faith," "Newsies," "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Once."

The nominees for Best Revival of a Play are "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman," "Gore Vidal's The Best Man," "Master Class" and "Wit."

Nominated for Best Revival of a Musical are "Evita," "Follies," "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Jesus Christ Superstar."

Vying for the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play are James Corden for "One Man, Two Guvnors," Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman," James Earl Jones for "Gore Vidal's The Best Man," Frank Langella for "Man and Boy" and John Lithgow for "The Columnist."

In the running for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play are Nina Arianda for "Venus in Fur," Tracie Bennett for "End of the Rainbow," Stockard Channing for "Other Desert Cities," Linda Lavin for "The Lyons" and Cynthia Nixon for "Wit."

The nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical are Danny Burstein for "Follies," Jeremy Jordan for "Newsies," Steve Kazee for "Once," Norm Lewis for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and Ron Raines for "Follies."

Shortlisted for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical are Jan Maxwell for "Follies," Audra McDonald for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess," Cristin Milioti for "Once," Kelli O'Hara for "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and Laura Osnes for "Bonnie & Clyde."

Nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play are Christian Borle for "Peter and the Starcatcher," Michael Cumpsty for "End of the Rainbow," Tom Edden for "One Man, Two Guvnors," Andrew Garfield for "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman" and Jeremy Shamos for "Clybourne Park."

The nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play are Linda Emond for "Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman," Spencer Kayden for "Don't Dress for Dinner," Celia Keenan-Bolger for "Peter and the Starcatcher," Judith Light for "Other Desert Cities" and Condola Rashad for "Stick Fly."

Competing in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical are Phillip Boykin for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess," Michael Cerveris for "Evita," David Alan Grier for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess," Michael McGrath for "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and Josh Young for "Jesus Christ Superstar."

Mentioned for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical are Elizabeth A. Davis for "Once," Jayne Houdyshell for "Follies," Judy Kaye for "Nice Work If You Can Get It," Jessie Mueller for "On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" and Da'Vine Joy Randolph for "Ghost the Musical."

The 66th annual Tony Awards will be broadcast on CBS June 10, live from New York's Beacon Theatre. Honoring the year's best in Broadway theater, the awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. Actor Neil Patrick Harris is to serve as host of the prize presentation.
