HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Singer Whitney Houston has been approached to take a spot as one of the judges on reality music show "The X Factor," The Hollywood Reporter says.

Simon Cowell recently fired host Steve Jones and judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, paving the way for what could be a new gig for Houston, the Reporter said Friday.

Houston had performed on the British version of "The X Factor" in October 2009.

While singer Mariah Carey has been under consideration for a judging spot since the show started, Cowell has said he believes her family life is too busy for her to be involved in the show. Cowell has also shot down rumors Beyonce was approached to judge the talent show.

Houston is slated to return to the big screen August in the musical drama "Sparkle," which co-stars American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.
