LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A man convicted of stalking and threatening Madonna was apprehended in Long Beach, Calif., a week after escaping from a Norwalk mental hospital, police say.

Long Beach police told the Los Angeles Times Robert Hoskins, 54, was picked up Friday after officers spotted him and recognized him as a fugitive.

He was returned to Metropolitan State Hospital after police confirmed his identity, the Times said.

Hoskins was sentenced in 1996 to 10 years in prison for harassing the pop icon. He was arrested again after his release and was placed at the state hospital in Norwalk, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

What he was arrested for after his release was not specified.

"Hoskins is a very psychotic man when not taking his medication and has very violent tendencies," the LAPD said in a statement Thursday.
