His body was discovered Wednesday morning, TMZ said.

The Los Angeles Times also cited unnamed law enforcement sources as saying Cornelius died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Although there was no sign of foul play, the newspaper said the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the music icon's death.

"Soul Train" ran from 1971 to 2006. Cornelius stopped serving as host of the series in 1993.
