NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A stage adaptation of the 1992 film "Leap of Faith" is to open on Broadway in April, the show's producers announced Friday.

Raul Esparza will star in the musical, which is produced by Paramount Pictures Corp. and written by Janus Cercone.

The show features music by Alan Menken, book by Cercone and Warren Leight, lyrics by Glenn Slater and choreography by Sergio Trujillo. It is being directed by Christopher Ashley.

Performances are to begin April 3 at the St. James Theatre.

"When his traveling ministry breaks down in a small Kansas town, part-time reverend and full-time con artist Jonas Nightingale quickly pitches a tent and invites the locals to a revival," a synopsis said. "The town sheriff, Marla Humes, is determined to stop him from separating the townspeople from their money."

Esparza is to play Jonas and Jessica Phillips is to play Marla.
