LOS ANGELES, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles judge ordered a man accused of stalking Selena Gomez to keep his distance from the singer-actress.

Superior Court Judge William Stewart Friday issued a restraining order against Thomas Brodnicki, 46, who allegedly had threatened to kill the 19-year-old Gomez.

The Los Angeles Times said Brodnicki had allegedly traveled to California from Illinois last year and was detained on a psychiatric hold after he threatened to kill Gomez.

Criminal charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence; however, Stewart granted the request for a restraining order in a civil proceeding.
