OXFORD, England, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Veteran pop star Robin Gibb checked into a British hospital for an intestinal problem, a statement on his Web site said.

The 61-year-old former Bee Gee was stricken with an inflammation of the colon and forced to withdraw from Saturday's BBC Songs of Praise concert in Colchester.

The nature of the crisis was particularly disturbing because Gibb underwent emergency gastro-intestinal surgery a year ago, and his brother, Maurice, died in 2003 while undergoing surgery for a twisted intestine, USA Today noted.

No surgery was scheduled pending the completion of tests at the hospital in Oxford.

The Web site statement thanked fans for their support in what was a "difficult time for him and his family."
