MIAMI, July 23 (UPI) -- Comedian Dave Chappelle apparently told no jokes but did check his text messages a few times during an appearance in Miami, members of the audience said.

The Miami Herald said Saturday that social-media accounts of the appearance said Chappelle missed wildly in his attempt to connect with his audience at the Zo's Summer Grove charity event.

The newspaper said the odd performance ended with heckling and the show's DJ giving Chappelle the hook by starting up the music while he was still on stage.

One Twitter post said Chappelle received four text messages while on stage "and actually checked them." The post also said a woman yelled out, "Can you please tell a joke so we can enjoy ourselves."

The Herald said Chappelle has been trying to get his footing back since he abruptly walked away from his popular Comedy Central series in 2005.
