Waterson and his siblings formed the group in the early 1960s, and it made its name by singing in pubs and clubs. The group was especially known for harmonies and renditions of traditional British folk music.

Waterson was born in Hull, England, Jan. 16, 1941. He and his sisters were orphaned as young children and their grandmother raised them.

He grew in up the Yorkshire fishing village of Robin Hood's Bay. When not performing he worked as a carpenter and boat builder.

His final appearance with the family group was at the Bromyard Folk Festival in England last year.

He is survived by a sister, his wife, Ann, four children and four grandchildren.
