NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Columbia Records says it will release "4," the fourth solo studio album from U.S. pop star Beyonce, next month.

The CD is set to drop June 28. It was recorded between spring 2009 and spring 2010 when Beyonce took time away from the spotlight, her record label said Wednesday.

"She engaged in what she describes as simple things, including listening to every kind of music she truly enjoys. Her mixed musical gumbo will be displayed on the upcoming album," Columbia said in a news release. "The title signifies not only the artist's fourth solo offering and the day of her birth but it is also a personal gift to her fans. For over one year now her fans around the world took to their social media pages urging her to name the album for her special number."

Beyonce was born Sept. 4, 1981.
