Domingo's shows will go on in Japan

LOS ANGELES, April 7 (UPI) -- Placido Domingo's U.S. representatives say the Spanish tenor has arrived in Japan and plans to perform two Tokyo shows as planned despite Thursday's earthquake.

Domingo, 70, is going ahead with his April 10 concert at NHK Hall and April 13 at Suntory Hall. His wife and granddaughter have joined him on the trip to Japan, which was devastated last month by a 9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami, then shaken again Thursday by a less severe earthquake.

Ana Maria Martinez, who was scheduled to perform with Domingo, has canceled, however, and Virginia Tola will now appear on stage with him instead. Domingo and Tola sang live on a television and online broadcast March 24 in Buenos Aires.

"I love the country and the people of Japan, where I have had so many wonderful musical and personal experiences," Domingo said in a statement Thursday. "My heart and my prayers go out to the whole nation, and I look forward to performing there on April 10 and 13 with Virginia Tola."
