'Spider-man' actress injured onstage

NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- T.V. Carpio, the actress who plays Arachne in "Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark," was injured during a stage fight, the musical's representative said.

"T.V. Carpio sustained an injury on Wednesday, March 16 during an onstage battle scene with a fellow actor," spokesman Rick Miramontez said in a statement Tuesday. "On doctor's orders, she will be out of the show for the next two weeks."

Although Miramontez did not disclose the nature of Carpio's injury, Broadwayworld.com reported it was whiplash.

The Hollywood Reporter noted Carpio replaced Natalie Mendoza in the role when Mendoza dropped out of the $65 million production after sustaining a concussion when a piece of equipment hit her on the head backstage.

Carpio is the fifth member of the company hurt during the show's months of rehearsals and preview performances.

The superhero musical with music by U2's Bono and The Edge is scheduled to open in June. The official date has been delayed numerous times while technical snafus are ironed out and creative changes made.

Reviews penned by critics who attended preview performances of the show have been largely negative and Julie Taymor, the musical's original co-author and director recently departed making way for a new creative team to take over.
