NEW YORK, March 8 (UPI) -- The producers of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," have told director Julie Taymor she may have to leave the Broadway show if she doesn't accept help fixing it.
The New York Times reported the development Tuesday.
Tickets to the $65 million superhero musical have been selling briskly since it began previews last November, representatives for the show have said.
However, its official opening date has been postponed numerous times while technical snafus were resolved and story issues revamped. It is now set to open March 15.
Although the show has not officially opened, most reviews published during previews have been harsh, with critics deriding the musical's story and soundtrack.
The Times said Tuesday the producers, Taymor and the show's co-creators -- Bono and the Edge of U2 -- have been mulling over how to re-tool the script and music this week. Also on the table are how many outside consultants should be hired to work on it, who they should be and when the show should open, the Times said.
Unnamed sources close to the talks also told the newspaper it is unclear whether Taymor will stay on as director.
"Spider-Man" spokesman Ken Sunshine declined to comment on the story, dismissing it as "speculation."
