Phil Collins says he's retiring from music

GENEVA, Switzerland, March 6 (UPI) -- Grammy- and Oscar-winning British rock star Phil Collins has announced he's done with music.

Collins, who rocketed to fame as the drummer and vocalist for Genesis and then went on to even greater fame as a solo artist, told FHM the years of concerts have taken a physical toll -- his back hurts, his hearing is poor and it hurts his hands to hold his drum sticks, People magazine reported Saturday.

The 60-year-old drummer, whose career goes back to 1968 and includes seven Grammys, 13 hit singles and an Oscar for a song in the "Tarzan" animated movie, says he's just not feeling it any more.

"I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me," Collins told FHM. "I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely."

Collins, who lives in a small town in Switzerland, acknowledges he has his detractors.

"I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that," he said. "It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me."
