MONTREAL, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Police in Montreal say they are investigating the death of Paul Frappier, a Haitian-born rapper and musician who went by the name Bad News Brown.

The (Montreal) Gazette said police told Frappier's girlfriend the hip-hop artist was beaten and shot, however, investigators have not publicly disclosed the suspected cause of his death.

The self-taught performer, who has opened for rap icons Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent, was found dead during the weekend in an industrial area near the Lachine Canal, not far from his home, The Gazette said Monday.

In addition to his blossoming music career, Frappier, 33, had begun acting and plays a role in the soon-to-be released film "Bumrush."

Frappier's manager and family told the newspaper they don't know why anyone would want to kill the musician.
