Surgery for injured CSO conductor Muti

CHICAGO, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The Chicago Symphony Orchestra said Music Director Riccardo Muti would require surgery on a fractured jaw suffered in a fall from the podium.

Muti, 69, apparently fainted during a rehearsal at Orchestra Hall and landed face first, the Chicago Tribune said Saturday.

Deborah Rutter, president of the CSO Association, said Muti would undergo surgery on Monday and would be out of commission for an unspecified period.

"Until the surgery, we don't have any further information," Rutter said.

Leonard Slatkin and Mitsuko Uchida filled in as quest conductors at Thursday night's concert. However it was not known who would handle the baton at the "Muti Conducts Brahms" concerts Feb. 17-19, the Tribune said.
