LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Surgery to repair a hole in the heart of rocker and reality TV personality Bret Michaels went well, said St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Michaels, 47, had the operation Monday to fix the condition discovered when he had a mini-stroke last May, People.com said.

"Bret Michaels underwent a successful heart procedure today at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix," the hospital said in a statement issued to People.com Monday. "Michaels is currently recuperating at St. Joseph's where he remains for observation in ICU."

Michaels has been battling various health issues for the past year. He also underwent an emergency appendectomy last April after which he suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage.

However, he went on to win TV's "The Celebrity Apprentice" and has since returned to performing live on stage.
