DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Eugenia Gingold, mother of singer-songwriter Carole King, died in Florida of heart failure at the age of 94, the family announced.

Gingold spent her life acting and directing in small theater companies in South Florida and her native New York and was more recently a theater critic for the Florida Screen and Stage News, the Miami Herald said Sunday.

Carol King said her mom died Dec. 22 at a hospice in Delray Beach. She was buried in Los Angeles.

King told the Herald that Gingold, who had kept her second husband's last name, organized plays and other shows starring the kids in their Brooklyn neighborhood.

"She had a lovely voice," King said from her home in Idaho. "She exposed me to music from the time I was in the womb. And when I made my Broadway debut in 'Blood Brothers' in 1994, she was my coach."
