NEW YORK, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Rock 'n' roll icon Jerry Lee Lewis is to appear in a performance of the hit Broadway show "Million Dollar Quartet," the musical's producers said Wednesday.

Lewis is to perform during a special encore of the Sept. 10 performance -- three days after the release of his new album, "Mean Old Man," on Verve/Universal Music Enterprises.

A limited edition version of the album features a duet between Lewis and "Million Dollar Quartet's" Levi Kreis -- who received a 2010 Tony Award for his portrayal of Lewis in the show -- on the classic 1959 song "Money (That's What I Want)." The limited edition will be sold exclusively at Manhattan's Nederlander Theatre.

"On Dec. 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together," a synopsis of the musical said. "The place was Sun Records' storefront studio in Memphis. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the 'Father of Rock and Roll,' who discovered them all. The four young musicians united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time."

"Million Dollar Quartet" -- which was nominated for a Tony for best musical -- is based on that event.
