LONDON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- British pop star George Michael has been charged with possession of cannabis and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Scotland Yard said Thursday.

The charges stem from the 47-year-old singer's arrest last month in Hampstead, north London, the BBC said.

He is accused of crashing his car into a Snappy Snaps photographic franchise while drinking or using drugs.

Michael is due back in court Aug. 24, the BBC said.
