MEXICO CITY, June 28 (UPI) -- Popular Mexican entertainer Sergio "El Shaka" Vega was shot and killed by a group of gunmen on his way to perform at a village festival, officials said.
The 40-year-old singer was ambushed Saturday night when he drove his red Cadillac up to a toll booth in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa, CNN quoted the deputy attorney general's office as telling Mexico's state news agency Notimex.
Musicians have been targets of Mexican drug gangs in the past, CNN said.
Just hours before he was shot, Vega, who was famous for his songs about the lives of drug barons, had denied rumors that he had been killed, Sky News Online said.
"It's happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I've been killed or suffered an accident," Vega told La Oreja Web site shortly before his actual death. "And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her."
