25 titles added to Recording Registry

WASHINGTON, June 23 (UPI) -- The Metropolitan Opera's "Tristan und Isolde" and "Dear Mama" by Tupac Shakur were named to the U.S. National Recording Registry, the Library of Congress said.

Librarian of Congress James H. Billington listed the 25 additions to the eight annual National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, which is intended to ensure the cultural, artistic and historical recordings are always available to the American public.

"This latest list of selections showcases the diverse beauty, humanity and artistry found in the American soundscape," Billington said in a statement.

The additions to the registry, listed in chronological order from 1913 to 1995 are: "Fon der Choope" (From the Wedding) by Abe Elenkrig's Yidishe Orchestra; "Canal Street Blues" by King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band; "Tristan und Isolde" by the Metropolitan Opera, featuring Kirsten Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior; and "When You Wish Upon a Star" by Cliff Edwards.

Also included are "America's Town Meeting of the Air: Should Our Ships Convoy Materials to England?;" The Library of Congress Marine Corps Combat Field Recording Collection, Second Battle of Guam; "Evangeline Special" and "Love Bridge Waltz" by Iry LeJeune; "The Little Engine That Could," narrated by Paul Wing; the Leon Metcalf Collection of recordings of the First People of Western Washington State; and "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard.

Other new additions were "Smokestack Lightning" by Howlin' Wolf; the original cast recording of "Gypsy;" The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings by the Bill Evans Trio; "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" by Max Mathews; "I Started Out as a Child" by Bill Cosby; "Azucar Pa Ti" by Eddie Palmieri; "Today!" by Mississippi John Hurt and "Silver Apples of the Moon" by Morton Subotnick.

"Soul Folk in Action" by The Staples Singers; "The Band" by The Band; "Coal Miner's Daughter" by Loretta Lynn; "Red Headed Stranger" by Willie Nelson; "Horses" by Patti Smith; "Radio Free Europe" by R.E.M. and "Dear Mama" by Tupac Shakur also made the list.

There are now 300 recordings included in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.
