NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) -- Lyrics autographed by rock 'n' roll icon John Lennon were sold for $1.2 million at an auction Friday in New York, Sotheby's said.

CNN reported a private U.S. collector bought the hand-written lyrics for the Beatles song "A Day in the Life," which also bore Lennon's signature.

The hit song was from the band's 1967 album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

Bidding among three would-be buyers for the piece of memorabilia lasted about 6 minutes, CNN said.
