Lee wins 'Idol;' Simon says goodbye

LOS ANGELES, May 26 (UPI) -- Paint salesman Lee DeWyze was crowned the 2010 winner of "American Idol" in Los Angeles Wednesday night, beating out fellow finalist Crystal Bowersox.

"Oh my God... This is amazing. Thank you so much for everything. .... I've never been happier in my life," DeWyze declared after learning of his victory. "There are no words to describe it."

DeWyze then performed his rendition of U2's "Beautiful Day."

The show's Season 9 finale also saw the re-appearance of former "Idol" judge Paula Abdul, as well as performances by recording stars Janet Jackson and Joe Cocker.

Original "Idol" judge Simon Cowell said a poignant farewell to his co-stars and fans as he wrapped up his last episode to concentrate on producing and judging a U.S. version of Britain's "X Factor" talent show.

"I didn't think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am," Cowell said Wednesday night.

"It's great to have this little one back," he said, referring to Abdul. "What Paula said is true, the show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support, the fun and everyone, your sense of humor, that's been the best part. ... Everyone asks who is going to replace me, who will be the next judge and the truth is you (viewers) are the judges of this show and you have done an incredible job over the years. ... It's been a blast."
