CANNES, France, May 16 (UPI) -- Director Martin Scorsese is at the Cannes Film Festival in France collaborating with George Harrison's widow on a documentary about the late Beatles guitarist.

Scorsese and Olivia Harrison have been working on "Living In the Material World: George Harrison," for three years in a project that looks at the musician's life before, during and after The Beatles years. The project, expected to be released in 2011, will feature never-before-seen archival tape and video, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"His music is very important to me," Scorsese said in France. "So I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist. The film is an exploration."

Scorsese said he met Harrison several times, the first time when he was filming "The Last Waltz" in the 1970s. Scorsese directed the Bob Dylan documentary "No Direction Home."

"I think it's not only about George Harrison," said Olivia Harrison, "but about how a person moves through life and deals with his own life. And it was a pretty intense life for a young person."

Harrison died in 2001 of lung cancer at age 58.
