NEW YORK, April 30 (UPI) -- Brandon Victor Dixon has been cast as music icon Ray Charles in Broadway's upcoming "Unchain My Heart," the show's producers said.

Dixon's stage credits include "The Scottsboro Boys" and "The Color Purple."

Directed by Sheldon Epps, "Unchain My Heart" features music by the late Ray Charles and book by Suzan-Lori Parks.

Nikki Renee Daniels is to play Charles's second wife Della in the show, while Tasha Taylor is to co-star as Charles's backup singer Margie Hendricks.

The musical is to begin previews Oct. 8 and will open officially Nov. 7 on Broadway at a Shubert Theatre to be announced.

Additional members of the company will be announced at a later date, the production's producers said.
