LONDON, April 23 (UPI) -- Spanish opera great Placido Domingo, who recently underwent surgery for colon cancer, has been booked to perform at the BBC Proms, the U.K. broadcaster said.

The BBC Proms is an annual series of concerts and other music-themed events.

Domingo is to headline Verdi's opera "Simon Boccanegra," while Stephen Fry will introduce a complete performance of Wagner's "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg" starring Bryn Terfel, and Jamie Cullum will perform in concert, the BBC said.

The series will also include a celebration of U.S. composer Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday, as well as a performance of Mahler's "Symphony of a Thousand."

The festival is scheduled to run July 16 to Sept. 11 and will be televised across all of the BBC's channels.
