SAN ANTONIO, April 8 (UPI) -- A U.S. judge ordered a San Antonio college student to pay $27,750 for downloading copyright songs from the Internet and making them available for sharing.

U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez refused to reopen the case against Whitney Harper, 22, and approved five music companies' request that Harper pay statutory damages of $750 for each of the 37 songs she downloaded from online file-sharing sites when she was as young as 14.

Harper, now a Texas Tech University senior majoring in public relations, told the San Antonio News-Express the companies' demands were out of line, given that the songs could easily be downloaded for about $1.29 on iTunes or other pay sites.

She told the newspaper she had little experience using computers when she began downloading music for free from file-sharing sites such as Kazaa Media Desktop.

She said she now understands that what she did was against the law, but said the music industry wrongly targets people like her when it should go after Web sites and programs that make sharing of copyrighted music possible.
