NEW YORK, April 6 (UPI) -- The revival of "La Cage Aux Folles," starring Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge, is set to begin previews on Broadway, the show's producers said.

The first performance is to take place Tuesday night at Manhattan's Longacre Theatre. Opening night is scheduled for April 18.

The cast also includes Fred Applegate, Veanne Cox, Chris Hoch, Elena Shaddow, A.J. Shively, Christine Andreas and Robin de Jesus.

"La Cage Aux Folles" features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, and book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret.

This freshly reconceived production is choreographed by Lynne Page and directed by Terry Johnson.

"Georges is the suave owner of a glitzy drag club on the French Riviera," a synopsis of the show said. "Partnered romantically with his high-strung star performer, Albin, the pair live a charmed life -- until Georges's son announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative right-wing politician who's coming to dinner."

The original Tony Award-winning production was one of Broadway's biggest hits of the 1980s. It opened Aug. 21, 1983 at the Palace Theatre where it played for more than four years and 1,761 performances.

The new, critically acclaimed production played from Nov. 23, 2007 to March 8, 2008 at London's Menier Chocolate Factory.

It won the 2009 Olivier Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Actor in a Musical for Hodge.
