LOND, England, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Broadcasting unions say they will oppose a series of cuts by the BBC targeting the British broadcaster's Web site and two of its radio stations.
The Times of London said Saturday among the proposed BBC cuts is the broadcaster's Radio 6 Music radio station, which BBC Director-General Mark Thompson said is not worth its $9.15 million budget.
The potential cuts, which include closing down another radio station and half of the BBC's Web site, could result in the loss of more than 600 jobs.
British Phonographic Industry Chairman Tony Wadsworth has openly opposed the proposed closure of Radio 6 Music, saying the alternative music station has helped the careers of numerous bands in the past.
"This shows a fundamental misunderstanding about the way their music services work. 6 Music is not going to be replicated by the commercial sector," Wadsworth said.
The Times said the head of Absolute Radio, Clive Dickens, has offered to purchase the radio station to keep it in operation.
