NEW YORK, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Opera great Placido Domingo is to undergo preventive surgery in New York after suffering severe abdominal pain, his spokeswoman said Monday.
Publicist Nancy Seltzer told The New York Times the 69-year-old tenor suffered "intense pain and discomfort" while singing and conducting in Tokyo last week. When the pain persisted, he traveled to New York for a medical examination, and doctors recommended surgery, the Times said.
The Times said Seltzer declined to discuss the nature of the surgery, what condition it is likely to prevent, or when and where it is to take place.
"I know he's a public figure, but aren't certain things allowed to be private?" the publicist said.
Domingo is expected to miss about six weeks of performances while he recovers from the operation, the newspaper said.
