Memorial due for deadly nightclub fire

WEST WARWICK, R.I., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The Rhode Island lot where a nightclub fire claimed the lives of 100 people may be transformed into a memorial park to honor the victims, an architect says.

Landscape architect Robert Weygand, who reportedly is overseeing the design plans for the memorial, said any memorial dedicated to the victims of the 2003 fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I., should be built to endure, The Providence (R.I.) Journal said Saturday.

The owner of the lot where the nightclub once stood is planning on donating the land to The Station Fire Memorial Foundation.

Weygand said concrete work on a design for the memorial wouldn't occur until that property transfer is complete. The architect said a topographic site survey is needed before such work can get under way.

Meanwhile, in the wake of Saturday's seventh anniversary of the fire, a memorial service was scheduled for Sunday. Details regarding the memorial park plan were expected to be discussed at the memorial service.
