NEW YORK, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- U.S. country music singer Dolly Parton said she was once so upset about not having children that she considered committing suicide.

The New York Daily News said Friday Parton admitted to suicidal thoughts during a recent interview, detailing the unfortunate pairing in the 1980s of her menopause and her desire for children.

"I went through a dark time -- it lasted several months," Parton said. "I think I would have made a nice mama. I always thought I'd have kids. We tried to for so many years, and then I put it on hold because my career was doing so well and I was on birth control pills."

Parton, 64, said eventually she was able to put her bout of depression behind her and move forward with her life, the Daily News reported.

"Then one day, I just said to myself, 'Right, get off your fat butt, or if you really are suicidal, then go and shoot your brains out,'" the "Here You Come Again" singer said. "I thought, 'Maybe God didn't want me to have kids so that everybody else's kids could be mine."
