LOS ANGELES, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie are signing up artists in Los Angeles for a remake of the charity anthem "We Are the World," The Hollywood Reporter said.
Jones and Richie teamed up with pop icon Michael Jackson in 1985 to pen the song and organize dozens of other well-known U.S. musicians and singers, including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and Cyndi Lauper, for the original version, which raised money for Africa relief.
The Hollywood Reporter said Jones and Richie are now trying to get artists like Usher, Natalie Cole and John Legend to come together to record a new version of the song Feb. 1, the day after the Grammy Awards show. Proceeds from the sale of the new single would go toward aid for Haiti's earthquake victims.
Other artists that may take part in the 25th anniversary edition of the landmark recording are Wyclef Jean, Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.
Jackson died June 25 at the age of 50. The circumstances of his death are still under investigation.
