SARASOTA, Fla., Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Magnum Photos said photographer Dennis Stock, known for his intimate jazz performance portraits, died of colon cancer at the age of 81 in Sarasota, Fla.
The photographic cooperative, of which Stock was a member, confirmed Stock died Monday, ending a career that included notable portraits of jazz musicians and the late actor James Dean, The New York Times reported Friday.
Among Stock's more notable photos was a 1955 photograph of Dean featuring the "Rebel Without a Cause" actor walking in the rain with a cigarette in his mouth.
Essayist Ralph Pomeroy said in his 1982 book "Contemporary Photographers" that Stock captured the essence of jazz through the use of simple photographic images.
"He has managed to evoke jazz without the assistance of sound – its places, its atmosphere, its times, its makers," Pomeroy wrote.
The Times said Stock is survived by his wife Susan Richards, three children, a grandson and five great-grand-children.
