Producer Willie Mitchell dead at 81

MEMPHIS, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Music producer, musician and songwriter Willie Mitchell has died in Tennessee's Methodist University Hospital, his family said. He was 81.

Among his accomplishments was arranging and co-writing Al Green's classic song, "Let's Stay Together."

In addition to working with Green, he also collaborated with music stars like Rod Stewart, Keith Richards, Tina Turner, Boz Scaggs, Otis Clay, Ann Peebles and John Mayer, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal said.

Mitchell's grandson, Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, told the newspaper the R&B music titan known as "Poppa" died Tuesday morning.

The younger Mitchell said his grandfather had been in poor health since breaking his hip in September.

A private funeral service and a public memorial are being planned, the Commercial-Appeal said.
