LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- MTV Games said the U.S. rock group Green Day will be star of its very own video game with the upcoming title "Green Day: Rock Band."

Paul DeGooyer, senior vice president of Electronic Games and Music for MTV Networks Music Group, said in a MTV Games news release Sunday the standalone title will allow players to replicate the group's music via the Rock Band platform.

"'Green Day: Rock Band' is yet another example of how music fans can connect with some of the greatest music ever recorded via the Rock Band platform," DeGooyer said.

Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, agreed the new video game would allow the band's fans to experience the excitement of performing the group's hits.

"We want people to fire this up, choose their favorite Green Day tracks, and play along with us as Rock Band avatars so they can feel what it's like to perform on stage as Green Day," Armstrong said.

The video game is being developed in partnership with Warner Bros./Reprise Records and Harmonix Music Systems, Inc.

Green Day is also set to offer three more songs from the band's newest album, "21st Century Breakdown," on the Rock Band Music Store starting Tuesday.
