NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Hip-hop star Lil Wayne pleaded guilty Thursday to felony attempted weapons possession, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office said.

The 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Carter III, entered the plea as part of a deal with prosecutors with the understanding he will be sentenced to a year in jail, E! News reported.

Carter will be allowed to remain free on $30,000 bail until his sentencing, but was ordered to turn in his passport, the entertainment news Web site said.

"Wayne decided that this was what he wanted to do. I think he had made the decision some time ago and there were discussions (with members of his entourage,)" the recording artist's lawyer, Stacey Richman, told E! News.
