Officials: Pulmonary edema killed Gately

LONDON, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Irish singer Stephen Gately, a member of the singing group Boyzone, died from acute pulmonary edema, an autopsy conducted on his body revealed.

An official in Spain confirmed to the BBC the cause of the 33-year-old musician's death.

Gately was found dead in his vacation home on the island of Majorca Saturday afternoon reportedly after a night of heavy drinking in the city of Palma with his civil partner, Andrew Cowles.

Cowles and Gately's family have been granted permission to transport the singer's remains home to Ireland for a funeral.

"The family's only wish is to get their son and brother home as soon as possible," family lawyer Gerald Kean told the British broadcaster.

Although the results of toxicology tests are not back yet, an official said the consumption of drugs or alcohol was not the cause of Gately's death.

Police have said there were "no signs of suspicious circumstances" and have ruled out foul play.
