BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Warner Bros. Pictures says all three installments of its Hobbit franchise will be screened as a nearly nine-hour-long movie marathon in select theaters Dec. 15.
The event is scheduled to take place two days before the U.S. theatrical release of the third and final film The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which, like The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, are based on J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy novel The Hobbit.
Set to open Dec. 17, Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins, played by Martin Freeman; dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield, played by Richard Armitage; and their companions, the Company of Dwarves.
"The Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but now must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon, Smaug, upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town," a synopsis said. "As he succumbs to dragon-sickness, the King Under the Mountain, Thorin Oakenshield, sacrifices friendship and honor in his search for the legendary Arkenstone. Unable to help Thorin see reason, Bilbo is driven to make a desperate and dangerous choice, not knowing that even greater perils lie ahead."
The film co-stars Ian McKellen, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Billy Connolly, James Nesbitt, Ken Stott, Aidan Turner, Dean O'Gorman, Graham McTavish, Stephen Fry and Ryan Gage. The cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom, Mikael Persbrandt, Sylvester McCoy, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Jed Brophy, William Kircher, Stephen Hunter, Adam Brown, John Bell, Manu Bennett and John Tui.
